Recent research has provided further evidence that Visual Spatial Processing plays a crucial role in sports. This cognitive ability involves the brain's capacity to interpret and manipulate visual information in relation to space, distance, and orientation. It is not only a distinguishing factor between athletes and non-athletes but also a key difference-maker at the highest levels of sports.
In the NFL, Visual Spatial Processing is particularly relevant for quarterbacks, as it affects their pocket presence and field awareness. For example, quarterbacks with strong Spatial Awareness can maintain good spacing from their linemen and make better decisions when the pocket collapses. Our AIQ data shows that the top 15 quarterbacks in the NFL last year had significantly better Spatial Awareness than the other QB’s in the league.
Likewise, in the NBA, Navigation is an essential aspect of Visual Spatial Processing that influences a player's ability to find the best path to a spot on the court. It also impacts their efficiency in transition as well as their ability to perceive passing lanes, identify back-door cuts, and take effective angles to protect the rim. During the 2021-2022 NBA season, our data revealed that the top wings and bigs in the league scored significantly higher on Navigation than their counterparts.
